For the first time in 12 years, the Cleveland Guardians embarked on a new season without Terry Francona in the dugout. Following a disappointing 2023, new skipper Stephen Vogt is attempting to turn one of the youngest teams in Major League Baseball into a contender once again.
Bally Sports Great Lakes is once again the television home of the Cleveland Guardians, broadcasting all of the team’s games not airing exclusively on a national platform. The remaining games will air on FOX, FS1 or Apple TV+. The team isn’t currently scheduled to play any games on ESPN or TBS, but that could change as the season progresses. And if you’d simply rather catch the action live, tickets are now on sale for all of the Guardians home games for the 2024 season.
The Guardians are hurdling towards the postseason and are trying to carry over their first half success despite a season-ending elbow injury to ace starting pitcher Shane Bieber. Though sometimes shelled, the remaining starters have supplied just enough on the mound while the offense is led by All-Star third baseman Jose Ramirez and All-Star outfielder Steven Kwan. After a soaring start, the latter has been slushing through average play in recent weeks.
While their hitting has struggled at times, Cleveland has received a boost from rookie Jhonkensy Noel. In 138 at-bats, he has 13 home runs and 27 RBI with an OPS of .917. Noel currently holds a .254 batting average.
Anchored by the scintillating All-star closer Emmanuel Clase, who shut the door on the National League in the Midsummer Classic, the Guardians boast one of the best bullpens in baseball, though their massive inning intake appears to be taking its toll. Clase, who holds a 0.70 ERA, leads the American League with 41 saves and is second in Major League Baseball behind St. Louis Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley (42).
After 140 games, the Guardians are 80-60 and have a four and a half game lead over the Minnesota Twins and Kansas City Royals in the American League Central. They recently regained their footing after briefly allowing the Royals to tie for the lead in the division.
In the last 10 games, the Guardians have stayed at .500 while the Twins and Royals have both lost seven of their last 10 games.
Cleveland and the New York Yankees are half a game behind the Baltimore Orioles for the best record in the American League.
The Guardians made two moves at the trade deadline, acquiring outfielder Lane Thomas and right-handed pitcher Alex Cobb. Thomas recently broke out of a slump with his first home run as a Guardian, helping Cleveland clip the Royals. He snapped a streak of 213 at-bats without a home run. Thomas continues to be a strong base-stealing threat, racking up his 32nd stolen base of the season.
